Witness

Privacy

This privacy notice applies to the pre-launch Witness website and to the WITNESS personal-safety app, operated by Lara Steinauer, an individual and sole proprietor, under the trade name Quiet Part Loud. Quiet Part Loud is a trade name, not a separate legal entity. This notice explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and what choices you have.

Effective date: October 14, 2026.

Text and call alerts are not yet publicly available. The sections below describe how they are designed to work. See SMS & Calling Consent and the Terms of Service.

The website: information we collect

If you sign up for launch updates, we collect your email address. We also process limited technical information to protect the signup form from spam and abuse. We do not store your raw IP address with the launch-update list.

The website: how we use your information

We use your email address to send you updates about Witness and its launch.

The website: service providers

The website is hosted by Cloudflare. Cloudflare provides infrastructure used for website hosting, data storage, analytics, and protection against automated abuse.

The website: how long we keep your information

We keep your email address until you ask us to remove it or Quiet Part Loud no longer needs it for this purpose.

The website: sharing

We do not sell your launch-update information.

Removing your email

To have your email address removed from the Witness launch-update list, email hello@witnesssafetyapp.com.

The website: analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand use of this website. The signup form also uses Cloudflare Turnstile to protect against spam and automated abuse.

The app: information we collect

Account. You sign in with a phone number, which Google Firebase Authentication verifies with a one-time code. We also keep your display name, an optional profile photo, your notification preferences, and, for each device you use, a notification token and device type so we can send push notifications. We also record which safety notices you have confirmed.

Safety Circle and Emergency Contacts. The people you invite, the people who invite you, and the Emergency Contacts you designate are recorded, and members see each other's display name and photo. These are people you add yourself. WITNESS does not ask for access to your phone's contact list. If you invite someone by phone number, we keep a one-way scrambled (hashed) form of that number and its last four digits, rather than the number itself, until they join. Invitations that are not accepted expire after 30 days.

Location. WITNESS uses your precise location during an active Walk With Me, Emergency, Medical or I Feel Unsafe session. While a session is active, your live location is shared with the people described under "Who can see it" below. For Walk With Me and for Emergencies this can include a trail of where you have been during the session. The route history of a Walk With Me is deleted when the walk ends without becoming an Emergency. We have not set fixed retention periods for other location records.

Alerts you send. The type of alert (Emergency, Medical, I Feel Unsafe or Walk With Me), your name, the details you choose to give, and the status of the alert.

Recordings. If recording is turned on for an Emergency, an I Feel Unsafe alert or an escalated Walk, or is requested by a Professional Monitoring operator and you allow it, WITNESS records audio and in some cases video and stores it privately. Recording may continue while the alert is active if you leave the app or lock your phone.

Medical information. If you enter medical information (conditions, medications, allergies and other notes), it is stored in your profile and is visible only to you. When you send a Medical alert, a copy of that information is included for the Professional Monitoring operator handling the alert. It is not shown to your Safety Circle.

Safety PIN and notes. Your Safety PIN is stored only in a protected, hashed form and cannot be read back. Secure notes you add are stored privately and are not shown to other users.

Nearby helpers. If you choose to make yourself available to help others nearby, we store your precise location, how far you are willing to travel, and the kinds of alerts you will help with while you are available. We have not set a retention period for these records.

Phone numbers and consent records. See "Text and call alerts" below.

Minors

You must be at least 16 to use WITNESS. People aged 16 and 17 may use it independently. WITNESS is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child under 16 has an account, email hello@witnesssafetyapp.com.

The app: how we use information

To run WITNESS and its alerts, including showing your alerts and live location to the people you chose; to send the text and call alerts people have agreed to and honor STOP and their settings; to keep the Service working and safe and to prevent abuse and fraud; and to meet legal obligations. We do not use phone numbers for marketing.

Text and call alerts

If you turn on text or call alerts, we use your verified phone number to send them. In addition to the phone number on your account, we keep:

An alert names the person who sent it so you know who needs help. If someone lists you as a Safety Circle member or Emergency Contact, nothing is sent to your phone unless you have agreed to it yourself.

Service providers and who processes your information

These providers process information to provide their service to us. We do not sell your phone number or your consent records. We do not share mobile phone numbers or text-messaging opt-in data and consent with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. We may disclose information if the law requires it or to protect someone's safety.

Who can see it

How long we keep information

We have not set fixed retention periods for most app information, and we do not promise that any particular information is deleted automatically. Account information, alerts, recordings, messages, notes, consent records and delivery records are kept until we delete them. The automatic removals we can state are that Safety Circle invitations that are not accepted expire after 30 days, and that the route history of a Walk With Me is deleted when the walk ends without becoming an Emergency. We may keep minimal records, such as that someone replied STOP, so that we continue to honor their choice.

Deleting your information

WITNESS does not yet have a self-service control for deleting your account or information. To ask about deleting your account or information, email hello@witnesssafetyapp.com. We will review your request. We may not be able to delete everything, for example where the law requires us to keep information or where we need a minimal record to honor an opt-out.

Your choices

Security

We use reasonable measures to protect information, such as sign-in verification, access rules on stored data, and storing PINs only in hashed form. No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of your information.

Changes to this notice

We will post changes here. If a change affects text or call alerts, we will ask for your consent again before sending under the new terms.

The app: analytics

The app does not include a separate analytics or crash-reporting service. The providers listed above may process technical information needed to provide their own services.
